Turning Passion into Purpose: Pat McAleer’s 5,000-Mile Journey
For long-time Richmond resident Pat McAleer, retirement isn't a pause—it is a launchpad. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Pat is stepping into his next chapter by embarking on a monumental journey of endurance and advocacy.
On July 15th, Pat began his 5,000 mile ride from the Pacific shores of La Push, Washington, back to Virginia Beach, VA. This cross-country trek, running through October 15th, is driven by a profound personal mission.

“For me, this journey began long before I started planning a route across the country. It started at home, watching my daughter, Mary Kate, navigate the daily challenges of type 1 diabetes with incredible strength. This ride is my way of turning that family experience into a nationwide fundraising effort. Not just as a cyclist, but as a father who believes that with enough collective determination, we can find a cure. I am covering thousands of miles to raise awareness and funds for type 1 diabetes research. This personal mission has grown into something bigger; a challenge rooted in my belief that more can always be done.”
A Legacy of Giving Back
Pat and his wife, Molly, have anchored their 31-year marriage in family, community, and philanthropic purpose. As dedicated Community Foundation fundholders, the McAleers have long championed causes close to their hearts, consistently supporting healthcare initiatives, medical research, and organizations like Breakthrough T1D. Now, with the gift of time that retirement brings, Pat is scaling his commitment to service. His goals for this new chapter are clear: maintain an active life, serve others, and strengthen connections—whether across the dinner table or across the nation on two wheels.

“I have always loved to ride, but this journey is about more than the road ahead. With retirement giving me the opportunity to go all in, I’m turning my passion into purpose. I am taking this once-in-a-lifetime journey to support those living with type 1 diabetes and help drive progress toward a cure. Because this ride isn’t just about miles, it’s about doing something hard for people who never get a break.”
