SisterFund Celebrates 10 Years of Philanthropic Impact for Black Women and Girls in Richmond
This year marks a powerful milestone for SisterFund, a philanthropic giving circle of African American women committed to uplifting Black women and girls across the Richmond region. As the group celebrates its 10th anniversary, it also celebrates a decade of inspired giving, community building, and regional advocacy.
Since its founding in 2015, SisterFund has worked in partnership with the Community Foundation for a greater Richmond to grant to and empower local nonprofits that center the development, success, and well-being of Black women and girls. Through collective giving, SisterFund has awarded grants totaling $430,000 directly impacting 13 organizations that are driving change in the areas of education, health, workforce development, and leadership.
One such organization is Birth in Color, which has championed maternal health care and reproductive justice in Virginia since 2018. Dedicated to empowering communities through culturally inclusive support and dismantling systemic barriers in maternal, reproductive, and infant health, Birth in Color has received two grants from SisterFund. In 2022, the organization received a $60,000 grant to expand its HUB Network, and in 2023, SisterFund awarded an additional $25,000 grant to increase the number of breastfeeding specialists and services available to clients. These investments have helped Birth in Color strengthen its programs and expand its reach—improving outcomes for numerous families.
At its core, SisterFund is about transformation, both within the community and among its members. The group’s mission is simple and powerful: to improve the lives of Black women and girls by investing in organizations that share this same goal. Their vision is rooted in long-term, systemic change—funding programs that foster resilience, innovation, and measurable outcomes.
But SisterFund is more than just a funding source; it’s a dynamic sisterhood. The giving circle is made up of a diverse network of African American women who pool their resources to amplify their impact. Members can engage in a variety of ways—participating in educational programs, reviewing grant applications, organizing events, and helping recruit new members. Whether deeply involved or contributing financially, every member has a voice and a role in shaping the future of the circle and its impact.
Over the years, members have not only made a mark externally but have also grown in knowledge and connection, deepening their understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing Richmond’s communities. Through grantee presentations and learning experiences, SisterFund fosters informed, engaged philanthropy that empowers women to become changemakers.
As SisterFund enters its second decade, the call is clear: this is only the beginning. There’s still much work to be done—and room for more women to be part of this powerful journey.
