Turning Passion into Purpose: Pat McAleer’s 5,000-Mile Journey

For long-time Richmond resident Pat McAleer, retirement isn't a pause—it is a launchpad. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Pat is stepping into his next chapter by embarking on a monumental journey of endurance and advocacy.

On July 15th, Pat began his 5,000 mile ride from the Pacific shores of La Push, Washington, back to Virginia Beach, VA. This cross-country trek, running through October 15th, is driven by a profound personal mission.

That dual focus — production and prosperity — shaped the Fund’s design. It offers subsidies to builders developing homes for buyers earning between 60% and 120% of area median income, the range where many working families fall. The revenue comes from a modern source: taxes generated by Henrico’s growing network of data centers.

“Through this investment, Henrico is redefining what it means to grow responsibly connecting the County’s economic gains to the families working every day to call it home.“ – Carney

Before the first home was built, PHA spent a year establishing relationships with builders, lenders, and realtors to shape a program that worked for everyone involved. The early meetings weren’t easy — the idea of a publicly supported homeownership initiative raised both excitement and skepticism.

“The red tape in most affordable projects keeps builders away,” said a homebuilder who participated in the Fund. “PHA’s approach took that off the table. They created a system that was fast, fair, and predictable. Once we saw that, we were all in.”

A Legacy of Giving Back

Pat and his wife, Molly, have anchored their 31-year marriage in family, community, and philanthropic purpose. As dedicated Community Foundation fundholders, the McAleers have long championed causes close to their hearts, consistently supporting healthcare initiatives, medical research, and organizations like Breakthrough T1D. Now, with the gift of time that retirement brings, Pat is scaling his commitment to service. His goals for this new chapter are clear: maintain an active life, serve others, and strengthen connections—whether across the dinner table or across the nation on two wheels.

I have always loved to ride, but this journey is about more than the road ahead. With retirement giving me the opportunity to go all in, I’m turning my passion into purpose. I am taking this once-in-a-lifetime journey to support those living with type 1 diabetes and help drive progress toward a cure. Because this ride isn’t just about miles, it’s about doing something hard for people who never get a break.”
