The Legacy of Eldridge Cook
Eldridge Cook knew something about overcoming odds. The grandson of formerly enslaved people, he grew up in the segregated South. At age 9, his mother died, and he moved to Gloucester to be raised by his grandparents. Opportunities for Black youth were scarce, but his grandfather, a local merchant, and Thomas Walker, the county's first African American attorney, taught him that hard work and dedication could still make his dreams possible.
Just out of high school, Eldridge bought Gloucester County's first freight truck and began hauling fresh seafood to cities up and down the East Coast. He grew his fleet, expanded his routes nationwide, and during World War II, hauled lumber for the war effort. In 1950, he founded Cook's Seafood Company, which became a leading seafood supplier in Hampton Roads, employing up to 250 people at its peak. During this time, he was supportive of employees with family needs, including helping with college expenses for their children. He worked until he closed the business at 95.
When he retired, the Virginia General Assembly honored him in a joint resolution, calling him an inspiration to every Virginian, "irrespective of race or color," for his contributions to the seafood industry, his community, and his church. For all he accomplished, Eldridge stayed humble and let his actions speak for themselves. He loved Gloucester because it was home. He worked hard because he knew no other way. And he gave back because he believed it was right.
In 2010, he made a modest gift to start an endowed fund at the Gloucester Community Foundation, a regional affiliate of the Community Foundation for a greater Richmond — with a clear purpose of giving young people at risk of falling through the cracks a hand up. He passed a few years later, just shy of 100, before the fund had made a single grant. But because he'd taken the step to establish the fund during his lifetime, his intentions were already in place. When his estate settled, the fund grew to over $1 million — and it has been growing, and giving, ever since. Today, the fund provides steady, growing support for youth-serving organizations across Gloucester, giving young people the opportunities and confidence to achieve their own dreams, just as Eldridge achieved his.

The Eldridge Cook Charitable Fund demonstrates how a lifetime of generosity can become a growing source of opportunity for future generations.
