Advancing Economic Mobility through the Amandla Fund
The Amandla Fund for Economic and Racial Justice announces New Advisory Committee Members
The Amandla Fund for Economic and Racial Justice was established by the giving circles, SisterFund and Ujima Legacy Fund, in partnership with the Community Foundation in 2020. The Amandla Fund provides a philanthropic pathway to increase economic mobility for Black families, with grantmaking focused on addressing the racial wealth gap and reducing disparities in homeownership throughout the Richmond region.
The Fund’s inaugural initiative—the Economic Mobility & Black Homeownership Pilot Program—launched in collaboration with Southside Community Development and Housing Corporation last year.
During its first pilot phase in 2024, the program supported 10 Black first-time homebuyers earning between 80% and 150% of the area median income. Participants received down payment assistance grants, along with comprehensive pre- and post-purchase counseling to ensure long-term success as homeowners.
The second year of the pilot is focused specifically on families, serving a total of 52 people, including 17 families who are first time homebuyers, with most recipients being single parent households led by women.
This year, the Amandla Fund welcomes four new committee members: Jill Coleman, Rasheeda Creighton, Dionne Henderson, and Albert Walker, III. They join six continuing members, bringing a wealth of expertise and deep commitment to community advancement. Together, the committee guides the Fund’s vision and impact, ensuring that resources are directed toward meaningful, lasting change.
