Birth in Color: Advancing Black Maternal Health in Virginia

Birth in Color, has championed maternal health care and reproductive justice in Virginia since 2018. Dedicated to empowering communities through  culturally inclusive support and dismantling systemic barriers in maternal, reproductive, and infant health, Birth in Color has received two grants from SisterFund.

In 2022, the organization received a $60,000 grant to expand its HUB Network, and in 2023, SisterFund  awarded an additional $25,000 grant to increase the number of breastfeeding specialists  and services available to clients. These investments have helped Birth in Color strengthen  its programs and expand its reach—improving outcomes for numerous families.

Currently, Birth in Color is building Maternal Health Hubs across Virginia—community-centered spaces designed to provide families with culturally competent care, doula support, education, and resources that address maternal health disparities. These hubs strengthen connections between families, providers, and advocates to ensure equitable care for every birthing person.

The organization is also launching a Fathers Program, which includes innovative Dad’s Self-Care Days. This program recognizes the vital role of fathers in family well-being by creating safe spaces for men to connect, recharge, and access tools for parenthood, mental health, and community leadership.

In addition, Birth In Color is proud to host Voices and Votes, a one-of-a-kind community celebration where culture and civic engagement meet. On September 27, this free family-friendly event features live music, food trucks, voter registration opportunities, and interactive town hall pods.
